The global ecological crisis is inseparable from an anthropocentric paradigm that reduces nature to an object of exploitation and obscures humanity’s place within a sacred web of life. Addressing this crisis requires a critical re-examination of Islamic textual traditions, particularly Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, which contains teachings on tree planting, humane treatment of animals, and moderation in water use that may provide a textual foundation for Green Sufism. Against this backdrop, the study examines four ecological hadiths from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī by relating them to four Sufi values (tawḥīd, zuhd, mīzān, and khalīfah) to formulate an Islamic environmental ethic. Adopting a qualitative library-research design, the analysis combines basic takhrīj, readings of classical commentaries, particularly Fatḥ al-Bārī, and Sufi hermeneutics through an integrated exoteric–esoteric reading of thematically selected (mawḍūʿī) hadiths. Such an approach reveals a coherent Sufi-ecological ethos underlying teachings on tree planting, animal welfare, water conservation, and human stewardship. Nature emerges as āyāt Allah, resource use is framed by self-restraint; ecological relations are governed by balance (mīzān) and compassion (raḥmah); and human stewardship constitutes a divine trust (amānah). By establishing a direct conceptual link between Sufi values and Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, this study advances a hadith-based framework of Sufi environmental ethics. It highlights its implications for Islamic education, particularly in framing ecological stewardship as an integral dimension of worship. Green Sufism, therefore, rests on a substantial textual foundation within the hadith tradition rather than merely constituting a contemporary theoretical discourse.
